ASSIGNMENT 7b: Crafting and Tailoring C>D

The finest asset you will have as a leader will be your ability to tell YOUR story, intentionally, and impactfully.

The first time you unveil your story on stage, you will be grateful to yourself for the time and attention you placed into crafting the elements of your story. You will feel the support and love of every person you invited to assist you in finding just the right elements, speed, tonality, and vulnerability.

By the time you are finished, you will have the flexibility to tell at least one of your stories in 5-minutes, 20 minutes, and woven through an entire event or training.

Your assignments will start at the beginning. It will begin with telling and retelling a 5-minute version of your story. The intention is to find just the right points that your story will hinge on.

Assignment 7b

  1. Brainstorm the Teachings you have earned on your travels
    • Think back to the journey that began the day you drew that amazing line in the sand
    • What were all the steps you made?
    • Who did you resource with?
    • What did you learn?
    • What beliefs changed for you?
    • What new skills do you have?
    • What new perspectives do you have?
    • What new ways of ‘doing’ or ‘being’ have you put into place?
    • What will you ‘never’ be or do again?
  2. Assess and find the key steps/learnings in your journey
    • There are lots of ways to organize and pull your journey together. Identify as many patterns as possible.
    • Here are some possible patterns you may discover:
      • Key Beliefs that changed
      • Key Skills you developed
      • Key People
      • Key Decisions/Changes
      • Key Milestones along the way
      • Best Advice you implemented
  3. Tailor The Lessons

The key to successful keynote is your ability to tailor the focus of your talk to your audience. You learned so much and finding key learnings that everyone can take away raises the value you provide 10-fold.

    • Pick a single audience or event where you can imagine delivering your keynote
    • Choose a set of learnings to share
    • Choose three of those learnings
    • Update your story to include these learnings only in your C>D segment

This will prepare you for the next phase – crafting your story for best effect

Assignment 7a

  1. Choose one of your completed stories: Your life is filled with journeys. You will notice that they are all part of a pattern – a spiral that has been your own growth. Be sure that you are complete on this story. You can tell you are complete because you are able to tell the story with:
    1. A sense of nostalgia for who you were then
    2. Deep appreciation for the growth and learning you received through that transformation
    3. Gratitude for all those who played a roll
    4. Celebration for your kick-ass-ness
  2. Plot the key elements on the Change State Indicator
    1. A > B: The context for the story
    2. B: …and then one day… tell them about how either i) the rug was pulled out or ii) you became aware of an amazing new possibility (D)
    3. B > C: The shadow time.
    4. C: Enough! This is the decision you made FOR you. This turns you away from the problem and towards the solution
    5. C > D: Journey of building new skills, resources, beliefs and values
    6. D: Your new normal – Woot!
    7. Tie back: So now what? How does this story allow you to serve others?
  3. Explore your story
    1. Let others in the group hear your story and provide feedback
    2. Record yourself telling your story for your own review
    3. Explore the elements

This will prepare you for the next phase – crafting your story for best effect

When giving feedback on this assignment to your group members, focus on the following things:

  • Does the context allow you to appreciate the impact of B?
  • Do the circumstances from B > C warrant the decision at C?
  • Does the journey to D have a great list of ah-ha’s, change in behaviours, decisions, resources
  • Is the tie-back relevant for their chosen audience?

ASSIGNMENT 6a: Leadership Storytelling

Deeply moving people through stories is a legacy of our humanity.

For a leader, there is an opportunity to take the art of storytelling and add science for incredible impact. We know that the brain functions on both the conscious and unconscious levels. By taking care to speak to both, the value we deliver grows exponentially. The added time and reduced effort, for both the trainer and participant, can be poured into greater connection, value, and fun for everyone.

Your assignments will start at the beginning and explore both metaphors and building up to design multiply-embedded metaphors. We will layer in the skillsets and set the stage for your mastery.

Assignment 6a

  1. Choose three stories for each of the following themes (15 in total);
    • I worry about what other people think, so I don’t speak up when I can help them
    • People won’t value what I have to share, and that means I need another degree
    • I’m just not motivated, so it will never happen
    • I’m not perfect and that means I can’t lead
    • I don’t want to make others mad, so I don’t say no when people are disrespectful
  2. Record yourself telling each one of them (expect to find yourself rambling…lol – you will not be sharing these recordings – they are for you)
  3. Tell the stories to others
  4. Pick your favourites (at least 1 for each theme) and record it on one of your index cards (problem theme, context, turning point, solution)
  5. Choose your best one from each of the themes and share them with your group for feedback (whether you do this live or record them is up to each group)

Feedback Considerations

When giving feedback on this assignment to your group members, focus on the following things:

  • Could you identify the context? (work, education, home, personal, rock climbing etc.)
  • Was the problem theme clear
  • What was the turning point (from problem to a solution) – was it obvious?
  • Was there a solution?
  • What emotions did you experience during the story?
  • Did the storyteller hold your attention throughout?
  • What was the impact you experienced?

Pro Tip: Stories can come from many sources. Your stories, friends, people you look up to, movies, or heck, make ’em up!

Bonus Pro Tip: Remember that you will always tell them differently each and every time. Give yourself room to do tell the story the way the listener needs to hear it in that precise moment. This means keeping your bullet points high-level – reminders only.

ASSIGNMENT 5c: Create a Workshop or Video Series Curriculum

We have been hearing how much easier it was to follow the process. How you didn’t need to know how it would all work out to have a great outcome when you followed the process. Well, we certainly noticed!

Now you have everything you need to create the individual 4Mats for each segment and then update/create your Meta 4Mat.

ASSIGNMENT 4: Anatomy of Story – 5 Stories

As a leader, people look to you to handle issues and move situations forward. Whether from the front of the room, or the kitchen, it is key to empower others to move forward. By using stories, we can nudge others without appearing to have intervened in a way that creates dependence or even bad feelings.

Success with assignment will depend a great deal on your willingness to make it easy. We are in the conscious incompetence place with a new area of learning. Choose easy stories for this assignment so that you can learn the inner workings. I promise that we will challenge further as the program moves forward.

Select 5 stories and use the story anatomy notation to record them:

  1. Brainstorm a large number of stories – personal, fables, legends, other people’s…
  2. Choose 5 that are complete in the world and you would find interesting to tell
  3. Post in #assignments on Slack that you have selected your 5 stories
  4. Find the 6 points in the story – Normal, Change, Low point, Decision, Path, New Normal
  5. Refine the points so that only a few words represent each point
  6. Repeat for all 5 stories
